Dandeli

Introduction:

Dandeli is a fast developing tourist destination with its amazing mix of beautiful natural scenery, wildlife and adventure sports. It is a district in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. This place is situated by the Kali River with the Western Ghats in the background. It is believed that the city got its name from a person named Dandelappa who was a servant in the house of the Mirashi landlords. He was very loyal and had in fact lost his life for it. The people hold him in great esteem and he is worshipped in temples.

Places of Tourist Interest:

Kavala Caves:
These are limestone caves and situated at a distance of about 25 km from Dandeli. There are 375 steps which the tourists have to climb down to reach the entrance. Next they have to crawl down 40ft deep through winding, narrow tunnels to catch a glimpse of the naturally created Shiva linga. It is advisable to carry a torch while going inside the cave. Currently, the caves are inhabited by numerous snakes and bats.

Shiroli Peak:
The peak is called the sunset view point and it offers excellent view of the peaks located in the Western Ghats. Tourists can also get a beautiful views of the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary from this point. The majestic Western Ghats are also visible from the Shiroli Peak.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary:
The place is home to the famous Black Panther and many other animals including: Giant Iguana, Tiger, Leopards, Elephants, Gaur, Malabar Giant Squirrel and many more. The sanctuary also contains about 200 species of birds. You can engage yourself in bird watching while you are on a safari to the place.

Public transport is hardly available in Chikmagalur

Shopping:
Shopping in Dandeli is all about buying bamboo craft items. The rich and unique heritage and culture of this place is reflected through delicate and fine bamboo art and crafts items. Some of the items that you may buy from here include bags, hand woven baskets, flutes, body gears out of bamboo. These items make for great souvenirs.
