Day 1
Manali - Sarchu (Approx 222Kms/ 07Hrs)

Your road journey to Leh will begin today stopping at Sarchu for an overnight stay. On this journey you will cross Rohtang Pass (3978 m), Keylong (3350 m), Baralacha Pass (4890m) reaching Sarchu (4253 m). Sarchu is the border of the states of Himachal Pradesh (Lahaul) and Jammu & Kashmir (Ladakh). Upon arrival in Sarchu check in at the tented campsite for an overnight stay.

Sarchu - Leh (Approx 255Kms/ 07Hrs)

Today early in the morning leave for Leh, through Nakeela and Lachangla Pass 16,617 ft.  After Lunch at Pang drive to Leh passing through Skyangchu Thang (Biggest and Highest Plateau on Earth on Stretch of 42 Kms), Tanglang La Pass 17,585ft and Indus Valley. Upon arrival in Leh, you will be greeted by our Local representative. Check in at the Hotel for an overnight stay.

Leh - Nubra Valley via Khardung La (18,390 ft.) (Approx 120Kms/ 4-5Hrs)

This morning post breakfast check-out from the hotel and drive to Nubra Valley. The road journey from Leh to Nubra Valley passes over Khardung La (The Highest Motorable Road In The World) at 5,602 Mtrs / 18,390 Ft, around 39 km from Leh. From the pass, one can see all the way south over the Indus valley to seemingly endless peaks and ridges of the Zanskar range, and north to the giants of the Saser massif. Nubra Valley is popularly known as Ldumra or the Valley of Flowers. It is situated in the north of Ladakh between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges of the Himalayas. The average altitude of the valley is 10,000 Ft. above sea level.
Upon arrival in Nubra, check in at the Camp / Hotel in Hunder for an Overnight stay. In the evening you can walk around the tiny villages to see how the locals live in this part of the world. A visit to a Ladakhi home can be arranged. Overnight stay at the camp.

Day 4
Nubra Valley - Leh (Approx 120Kms / 4-5Hrs)

After an early breakfast, check out from the Camp and drive to Hunder where you'll have the opportunity to ride on a bacterian camel (double humped) amidst the sand dunes of this high altitude desert with snow capped mountains on the horizon. Between Hunder and Diskit you will come across sand dunes besides the road. Seen in isolation you could well be amongst the sand dunes of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. It is indeed a strange sight since immediately on the left of the road are rocky mountains that characterize the Ladakhi landscape and in the distance can be seen snow-capped mountains. On the return stop at Diskit which is the headquarter town of Nubra Valley. Stroll around the bazaar observing the shops and local people going about their daily chores. Diskit is famous for 515 years old Buddhist Monastery, magnificently situated on a hilltop, facing the entire Valley.
Later drive back to Leh in the late afternoon via Khardungla Top. On arrival at Leh, check in to your Hotel. Day at leisure to rest and relax or for own activities.

Leh - Pangong Lake (Approx 140Kms / 4-5Hrs)

This morning after an early breakfast leave for Pangong Lake enroute visiting Shey Palace - The ancient capital of Ladakh & 3 Idiots Rancho School. Driving further 5 Kms through a picturesque landscape you will reach Thiksey - an impressive complex rising tier on a hill above the village. After visiting about two monasteries drive further towards Chang La Pass, 5486 Mtrs. The long easy ascent takes you to Chang La pass through its winding roads passing through Sakti Village. Stop at the Chang La Pass for a quick photograph session and drive down to the village of Tangtse, where you can relax for a cup of tea. Leaving Tangtse for Pangong you pass through few small villages of Changthang and finally you can have a sudden view of the Pangong lake situated at 14,000 feet (4,267 m). This famous blue brackish Lake of Pangong is 5/6 Kms wide and over 133 Kms long with half of it running the other side of the "Indo China Border". One rarely feels so close to nature and environment and the scenery is unforgettable. After the success of 3 Idiots, this beautiful natural location has attracted more tourists from all over the world. On arrival, check in at the Camp near Pangong lake. Dinner & Overnight stay at the Camp.

Pangong Lake - Leh (Approx 140Kms / 06Hrs)

This morning spend your time at leisure to explore the beauty of the lake and later drive back to Leh enroute visiting Hemis Gompa - the largest monastic foundation of Drukpa Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism. Drive further to Leh and check in at the hotel for an Overnight stay.

Leh - Excursion to Sham Valley

This morning post breakfast proceed for an excursion to Sham Valley. Drive downstream along the River Indus on Leh – Kargil Highway. Sightseeing will begin with Hall of Fame (Museum Constructed by India Army) near Leh which is worth a visit for every Indian, and proceed further to Gurudwara Patthar Sahib - Nestled deep in the Himalayas. A drive of another 4 km will take you to Magnetic Hill which defies the law of gravity. Further driving through a picturesque landscape you will reach the Confluence of the Indus and Zanskar River. After visiting the above mentioned places, drive back to Leh enroute visiting Spituk Monastery - Built in 15th century during the reign of Grags 'bum-lde, this new Gelug-pa monastery was built like fortress on the summit of crags. In the evening you can stroll around the market place for some last minute souvenir shopping. Overnight stay at Hotel in Leh.

Areas Covered

Manali - Manali is situated near the end of the valley on the National Highway leading to Leh. The landscape here is breath taking. One sees well-defined snow capped peaks, the Beas river with its clear water meanders through the town. On the other side are deodar and pine trees, tiny fields and fruit orchards. It is an excellent place for a holiday, a favorite resort for trekkers to Lahaul, Spiti, Bara Bhangal (Kangra), and Zanskar ranges. From temples to antiquity, to picturesque sight-seeing spots and adventure activities, Manali is a popular resort for all seasons and for all travelers.

Sarchu - Sarchu (also known as Sir Bhum Chun) is a major halt point with tented accommodation in the Himalayas on the Leh-Manali Highway, on the boundary between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh (Jammu and Kashmir) in India. It is situated between Baralacha La to the south and Lachulung La to the north, at an altitude of 4,290 m. The journey along the Manali-Leh highway at high altitude and variable road conditions, normally takes two days, so travellers and tourists use this spot as an overnight stop. An Indian army camp is sited nearby on the banks of the Tsarap Chu river. This spot can also be used as a start point for the difficult trek into the Zanskar region of Ladakh.

Leh - Leh was the capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh, now the Leh district in the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir. Leh district, with an area of 45,110 km2, is the second largest district in the country, after Kutch, Gujarat (in terms of area). The town is still dominated by the now ruined Leh Palace, former mansion of the royal family of Ladakh. This erstwhile capital of the kingdom of Ladakh is now a dream destination of many and the Mecca of adventure enthusiasts! Leh, one of the coldest deserts in the world is located at a distance of 434 kms from Srinagar and 474 kms from Manali (Himachal Pradesh).

Khardung La - Khardung La (la means pass in Tibetan) is a high mountain pass located in Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The local pronunciation is "Khardong La" or "Khardzong La," but, as with most names in Ladakh, the romanised spelling varies. The pass on the Ladakh Range lies north of Leh and is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. The Siachen Glacier lies partway up the latter valley. Built in 1976, it was opened to motor vehicles in 1988 and has since seen many automobile, motorbike and mountain biking expeditions. Maintained by the Border Roads Organisation, the pass is strategically important to India as it is used to carry supplies to the Siachen Glacier.

Nubra Valley - Nubra is a tri-armed valley located to the north east of Ladakh valley. Diskit the capital of Nubra is about 150 km north from Leh town. Local scholars say that its original name was Ldumra (the valley of flowers). The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Shyok river is a tributary of the Indus river. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. i.e. 3048 metres above the sea level. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La pass from Leh town. Non-locals require an Inner Line Permit (obtainable in DC office, Leh town) to enter Nubra.

Pangong Lake - A beautiful lake with deep blue waters, surrounded by tall mountain peaks. This lake lies on the Indo - China boundary, with only one fourth of the lake being in India. The road to this lake passes through Chang-la, the world's third highest motorable road. It's a 4 & Half hour drive (149 Kms) from Leh to this place. One rarely feels so close to nature and environment and the scenery is unforgettable. After the success of 3 Idiots, this beautiful natural location has attracted more tourists from all over the world.

Sham Valley - A day trip to Sham Valley is the easiest and most enjoyble excursion around Leh. It gives out the traditional aroma of the Ladakh village life from the villages you come across on the way. The main Ladakhi monasteries are lying in the remains of the ancient Kingdom of Shan, while there are many astonishing sites around to visit, like Alchi, Lamayuru, Phyang, Spituk, Hemis, Thikse and Shey, which are all reachable via the road. Finally, Likir, Ridzong and Temisgang follow you when trekking through the beautiful Ladakh trek route.

Shopping And Entertainment

One can enjoy shopping for curios and souvenirs in the bazaars and markets of Leh, while on your tour of Ladakh. Popular items with tourists are Pashmina shawls, stoles and other Pashmina wool garments. Locally handmade woolen socks, gloves, caps and sweaters are a favorite of tourists in Ladakh. Tibetan handicraft items including prayer wheels, Buddhist masks and Thangka paintings can be purchased in Ladakh. Tibetan silver jewelry and traditional Ladakhi jewelry with turquoise are also popular with tourists. Apricots that grow abundantly in Ladakh are another popular gift that you can take back as a delicious souvenir of your trip to Ladakh. Handwoven rugs, carpets and shawls are available in a range of prices in Ladakh's markets. Some other popular items with tourists are Pashmina shawls, stoles and other woolen garments. Handmade woolen socks, gloves, caps and sweaters are also a favorite of tourists in this region.

You can shop from local markets in Leh (Tibetan Market off the Old Leh Road for clothes, Moti Market near the Leh bus stand and Ladakh Art Palace,Women's Alliance in Changspa, Tibetan Handicraft Community Showroom in Choglamsar etc. or government-run emporiums, the choice is yours. While shopping in open markets, bargaining is commonly practiced and the final price you pay for any product will depend on your skill at negotiating with the seller. In government-run crafts emporia and larger established stores the prices are fixed and bargaining does not occur.
