BAREHIPANI FALLS-ORISSA

The picturesque Barehipani waterfalls of Orissa is situated in the heart of the Simlipal National Park and is based in the Mayurbhanj district. This waterfall is often claimed by many as the tallest in India. A combination of wilderness and beauty, the Barehipani falls are the second highest waterfalls of India, with a height of 1,309 ft. It is a major tourist attraction and a large number of tourists come to visit this matchless beauty every year. A visit to Simlipal is incomplete without getting a glimpse of these majestic falls.

DUDHSAGAR FALLS-GOA

Enter the sea of milk by visiting the Dudhsagar Waterfalls in Goa. As the cascading waters appear white like milk, the waterfall is called Dudhsagar, Doodh being the Hindi word for milk. Legend has it that a beautiful princess lived in the forest (near present day Dudhsagar Falls) in a palace. She loved and enjoyed bathing in a lake nearby and used to drink "sweetened milk" from her "golden jug" after finishing with her bath. One day while enjoying her jug of milk she found herself being watched by a prince, who was standing amongst the trees. Red with embarrassment at her inadequate bathing attire, she poured the jug of milk in front of him to form an improvised curtain to hide her body while the maids rushed to cover her with her dress. It is said that it is that sweetened milk that cascades down the mountain slope as Dudhsagar Falls to this day as a tribute to the virtue and modesty of the princess.

JOG FALLS-KARNATAKA

Known as the second-highest plunge waterfall in India, located near Sagara, Shimoga District of Karnatakastate, the Jog Falls are a major tourist attraction. These majestic falls drop nearly nine hundred feet in the form of four main channels namely Raja, Roarer, Rocket and Rani. Watching the Jog falls during the monsoons can be an unforgettable experience. The mist around it makes the setting magical to view.

NOHKALIKAI FALLS-CHERRAPUNJEE

Nohkalikai Falls in Cherrapunjee is the tallest plunge waterfall in India, having a height of 1100 feet (335 meters). Located in the North-eastern state of Meghalaya, Nohkalikai Falls is a jewel on the lush green mountains of the East Khasi Hills and the pride of Meghalaya. These breath-taking waterfalls are linked to a popular legend about a local women "Likai" who after a family tragedy became insane and jumped off the cliff next to the falls, after she discovered that her jealous husband had killed her daughter. In despair, the woman threw herself off this cliff giving the falls its name: "Fall of Ka Likai". It is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Its height is 1100 feet (335 metres)

MEENMUTTY FALLS-KERALA

A combination of Malayalam words ‘Meen’ which means fish and ‘Mutty’ which means "Blocked" the Meen Mutty Falls is located 29km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala. It is a 3 tier fall and each of its three tiers requires a separate hike through a moist, deciduous forest. If you love to hike, a visit to this waterfall will give you the most adventurous time of your life.

THALAIYAR FALLS-TAMIL NADU

Popularly known as the "Rat Tail Falls" the Thalaiyar Falls is located in the Palani Hills in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is the 3^rd highest waterfall in India and the 267^th highest in the world.The falls got the name of "Rat Tail Falls" because one can spot a silver line from a long distance on the way. It is possible for tourists to walk along the wall of the falls and reach the centre of the falls to enjoy them better.

VANTAWNG FALLS-MIZORAM

Located at a distance of about 137 kms from Aizawl, Vantawng Falls is the highest and most spectacular of all the waterfalls in the fast flowing rivers of Mizoram. It is located in Vanva River near Thenzawl and is named after Vantawnga who was said to be an excellent swimmer.The height of the fall is recorded as 750 ft and though it is difficult to get close to it because of the sheer forested hillsides surrounding it, a comfortable viewing tower has been constructed by the Tourism Department.

LINGMALA WATERFALL- MAHABLESHWAR

A perfect weekend getaway Mahableshwar has more than its greenery to offer, get soaked in the beautiful Lingmala waterfall which is just 6 km away from this picture perfect hill station. Located at the top of Venna Lake, the water plunges from a height of 600 ft which is a spectacular sight to watch. This waterfall is best viewed in the monsoon, where the heavy rains make it an even more jaw-dropping sight. Enjoy the quiet of nature with the sound of gushing water serving as music to your ears and a camera of course to make your visit worthwhile to the Lingmala Falls.

IRUPU FALLS-KARNATAKA

A major tourist attraction the Irupu falls located in Karnataka is a cascading waterfall bordering the Wayanad district of Kerala. It is also a popular pilgrimage spot, as the famous Shiva and Rameshwara Temple is situated en route to these falls. According to popular legend, Rama and Lakshmana, passed along the Bhramagiri range whilst searching for Rama's beloved, Sita. When Rama asked Lakshmana to fetch him drinking water, Lakshmana shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri hills and brought into being the river Lakshmana Tirtha. Due to this legend, the Irupu Falls is believed to possess the power to cleanse sins and is visited by thousands of devotees on Shivaratri day.

THOSEGHAR WATERFALLS-SATARA

The Thoseghar Falls is a scenic waterfall located in the small but beautiful village of Thoseghar, 20km from Satara city. The immediate area is calm and quiet, with a clean lake and dark woods in a hilly area, make sure you carry your picnic baskets along as this place serves as a picnic spot for tourists and has a newly constructed platform from where you can get a spectacular view of the Falls. The best time to visit the Thoseghar falls in during monsoon, where you can enjoy Mother Nature in all her glory!
